Mini Lesson Reflection
My mini lesson was taught on converting decimals to small fractions. I had a group of students who were struggling with understanding them, so my teacher gave me her Investigations teacher edition book to guide me a little with giving them examples to learn from. For example, we were counting and learned that .2 is the same as 0.2 is the same as 2/10. We worked on this with several different numbers, we drew fraction pies, and number lines to illustrate the concept better. (By number lines, I mean we wrote in the place value for each of the numbers to help us understand and remember their values. We went on to explore a little further and see what 1.3 means. Or what fraction represents 2.5?
It’s always rewarding to see a struggling student’s AHA! moment, especially when you are the one who helped them. Math is not my favorite subject, but the more I teach it, the more I begin to like it. If I were to teach this mini lesson again, I might already have some fraction pies already drawn out so that we can save time. Because during the mini lesson, I had to draw everything out and it took a little time. Another thing I might do differently is to partner the students up. We worked individually, but I know from experience that if a student is struggling enough, sometimes they can better relate to another student to help them be successful in finding the answer.
